Plugin to The Business Model Canvas

Over the course of the last few years, since publication of “Business Model Generation” various people have suggested:

  • “If we could just add / amend these few boxes then the business model canvas would be even more brilliant and would be closer to the theory of everything as far as business is concerned.

Alexander has resisted all such temptations and quite rightly so in my opinion – the business model canvas isn’t meant to be the theory of everything, it is a really useful tool but it was never designed to describe EVERYTHING about a business.

So I was interested to see in Alexander’s recent session at Stanford University with Steve Blank that he introduced the first “plugin” to the canvas which allows and encourages closer examination of the offer / customer fit, customer pains and gains.  This certainly fits nicely with Steve Blank’s customer development approach and I’m delighted to see the melding of “Business Model Generation” with “The Customer Development Process” and I’m looking forward to an early read of Steve Blank’s new book “The Startup Owners Manual” which I understand incorporate the business model canvas as a key tool.

The Fee

The fee is only £950 per month.

Minimal Small Print

  • My service is to help businesses with their marketing in any and all ways that are reasonable within the constraints of a couple of days each month. Much of my work can be carried out remotely. Those times when I need to travel to you then I charge 45 pence per mile, or recharge the costs of rail or air. If travel time is in addition to our two days per month then I charge £250 per half day traveling time.
  • To get the most out of it this should be a continuing relationship, but if after the first month you don't feel it is quite right for you then you can terminate it. No need to pay for a second or subsequent month.
  • After the first month we agree to a three month notice period
  • The monthly fee is paid via Direct Debit at the beginning of each month. I use a highly secure and reliable UK provider called "Go Cardless" for these payments. Of course they are covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee
  • Confidentiality & Non Disclosure. I undertake to treat your sensitive information with appropriate confidentiality and not to disclose any of it to third parties without your prior express consent
  • Also to increase efficiency & effectiveness I ask that most of our communication, once we get going, is through a cloud based collaborative working platform - I currently use ""
  • To be clear on the legal niceties, I work solely as an independent contractor and consultant. I am not an employee of your company, and I'm not entitled to any Company employment rights or benefits.
  • Governing Law. In the highly unlikely event that either of us get cheesed off to the extent of reverting to the law (its never happened so far) then our agreement is governed by the laws of England & Wales.
